Her experience was gained in Vaudeville and music hall perfor

The ultimate rollicking good read. I knew that Mae West was much more than a performer, but it was a pleasant surprise to find that on top of being a wit, she knew how to tell a story effectively. Her central character is Diamond Lil, a beautiful woman with elastic morals yet a deep sense that the Salvationists, bores that they are, deserve her help. Lil has struck it rich with Gus Jordan, boss of the Bowery, whose campaign to become sheriff is undermined by his involvement in the white slave tr ...more

Mae West (August 17, 1893 – November 22, 1980) was an American actress, playwright, screenwriter, and sex symbol.

Famous for her bawdy double entendres, West made a name for herself in vaudeville and on the stage in New York before moving to Hollywood to become a comedian, actress and writer in the motion picture industry.

“Girls who responded to the advertisement and then were willing to put themselves under Fong's wing, so to speak, till they could be inspected by the theatrical agent' were of a type that had no important family ties. (…) Each had a story behind her, but it was the story of the hundreds, the thousands. It was the story of a little ambition and a great hope; of immense trust and a few brains; of false pride and tragic courage. They were but units in the great mass of humanity which seem destined to struggle vainly for any realization of happiness and who go under in the backwash of the tide of living.” 1 likes
