This book is a lovely companion piece to A Dangerous Legacy and takes us back to gilded age New York.
As per always, Camden's ongoing fictional intention is the promotion of women in interesting occupations usually dominated by the men of their period.

Rosalind Warner is a doctor and biochemist in New York is at the forefront of sanitary research that will work to provide safe water to New Yorkers. Nicholas Drake ( familiar to readers of A Dangerous Legacy) is newly appointed as Commissioner of

I'm not a fan of insta lust/love / kissing early on in books. I didn't care for this hero's temper and how nastily he lashed out and I definitely don't plan to read the next book because the heroine in that book is a character in this one who I didn't care for. Don't like her.
It's really a shame because this had the typical brilliant Camden heroine and the historic story alone was interesting by itself without the other added stuff. Disappointed.

I didn’t particularly care for how it started. An instant attraction and kiss within such a short amount of time just doesn’t ring real for me. I didn’t really connect with any characters in this one. I also wish it had some sort of faith theme

However, I loved the story and plot. I’m a huge fan of Historical Fiction so I enjoyed the science, beginning of public water systems, and all the complications that went along with it. The fact that it was based on real characters and facts made

Another winner! I've never read an Elizabeth Camden book I didn't like... just sayin'...

The overall story was good and I liked getting to know both Rosalind and Nicholas. I felt a kinship with Nick and his desire to be connected with his family and always want to see the good in everyone. The romance was realistic and shows the dangers of falling too hard, too quickly.

This book actually made me say to my husband that we need to have our well water tested to make sure it is safe to drink. The aut

This is a 4.5 rating for me.
At the heart of this story is the question when is it alright to use individuals for experimentation without their consent?
Rosalind and Drake both want the same thing for their city. Clean and safe water. But their methods are so different and clash so that the budding romance is quickly squashed before it can blossom.
Rosalind is a strong woman who fights against the odds at that time to build a career in science at a time when it was not generally accepted for women

It was good. 100% cliche. 100% insta-love. But I actually enjoyed the story. I learned a whole bunch about water filtration and chlorination. And I loved that Rosalind wasn't like all attracted to Nick's muscles, but his grease covered hands.

If y'all want a content review let me know. Otherwise recommended for people 14 and up who don't mind cliches or instant-love.

To review a Elizabeth Camden book is nearly impossible. There is so much that gets me excited.
The density, carefulness and style with which she writes is full of flavor and creativity.
She always leaves me astounded by smart, witty and a bit unpredictable characters.

A Daring Venture was no different <3
Once I finished A Dangerous Legacy, I couldn't have been happier to learn it was actually the first in the series. I would definitely start there just because it's worth it.

I wanted to love this book, I did. Elizabeth Camden is one of my favorite Inspy fiction authors and one reason being, she writes about such unique pieces of history. An early 1900s female Doctor and biochemist? Count me in!

But y’all, there were just bits I couldn’t get past. One, is that I’m not a fan of the instant attraction/in love. You might be a fan, but it sometimes felt a little over the top for me.

One of my biggest hang ups was a decision Rosalind made I struggled with. Vague? Yes, but t

Dr. Rosalind Werner is a biochemist, with a passion for improving the welfare of communities so that they will not have to fear the diseases brought on by unclean drinking water. Rosalind fled scandal in Germany, and is fighting to prove herself in the experimental chlorination of public water. One of their fiercest opponents is Nick Drake, the plumber turned wealthy businessman.

Nick is just as passionate about the welfare of the community, but is skeptical of putting chemicals into public drink

I really enjoyed this latest book from Camden. My favorite part of her books is how well researched they are and how she uses actual historical events and happenings to create her stories. It is so intriguing to see how things came about even set in a fictional world of one of her novels because I know that it is all based on real life.

I always enjoy strong females in my books so I was thrilled with a female biochemist! I'm not a science person, but I can still appreciate that she was breaking i

I found the history behind the introduction of the chlorination process into the water treatment to eliminate water-borne diseases quite interesting as woven into the story. The book is interesting from a historical standpoint - though it is, of course, a work of fiction. The author does great research.

The two main characters, Rosalind Werner and Nick Drake, have strong character traits and some very weak ones. With Rosalind we see a young lady whose past haunts her though she is innocent of cul

A Daring Venture – Elizabeth Camden (5 Stars)

In the second entry in the Empire State series, A Daring Venture introduces Doctor Rosalind Werner, a biochemist with a passion for clean, disease-free water. Having lost her parents to cholera, Rosalind will risk everything to ensure that her family, friends, and neighbors are protected. A high-stakes court case places Rosalind on the opposing side of Nickolas Drake, the up-and-coming Commissioner of Water for New York. Nick is instantly attracted to

I just really enjoy the way Ms. Camden writes historical fiction. The science aspect of this story was so interesting. The storytelling was also very engaging. That prologue! However, I felt like the focus of the story was a bit muddled. All the different aspects of this story definitely helped to create well rounded characters, which ultimately made me invested in the outcome of this story, but they also made for a less cohesive feel while reading. There were some secrets kept, some lies told, ...more

I really enjoy Camden's books so I have been eager to get my hands on this new story! I really enjoy how her books get creative in their settings and careers of main characters. This series really dives into out of the box careers and I LOVE it! There is a lot of science/chemistry in this book (my least favorite subject) and yet I thought Camden did a splendid job in explaining things. I loved the setting, I loved the history and I liked how she tied this book to the first one. The two main char ...more

A Daring Venture by Elizabeth Camden is a fascinating tale of science. I have read all of Camden's novels, and every new addition captures my attention. I'm impressed every time she composes a new novel that includes how science shaped our country. Camden again does a good job at allowing her science to tell the story.

Her research is amazing. As a budding writer, I'm learning how to incorporate my research into my historical fiction novels, but Camden does a wonderful job at incorporating the r

A Daring Venture by Elizabeth Camden is the second novel in An Empire State Novel series. It is June 1908 in Jersey City, New Jersey when Dr. John Lael and Dr. Rosalind Werner, a biochemist, get the verdict on a two-year court case for which they were consultants. They have ninety days to prove their case that chlorine can prevent waterborne diseases in the water supply. It is a controversial idea and people are against a toxic chemical being added to their drinking water. How can they prove chl ...more

4.5 stars. One thing I can always count on in opening up a book by Elizabeth Camden, it will be so much more than I expect; there will be twists and turns such that the plot will end up in a totally different place than the book blurb implies, and I love it. (Not to call the blurb inaccurate--it isn't. The story is just so much more than the blurb.) While this is far from the most faith-filled of her novels, it is a fascinating story, full of controversy that's not unlike what we go through toda ...more

So, if the cover and the beautiful hair adornments on the front of this book were not enough to get you to pick it up, you have to pick it up for the history. I never knew plumbing, and the chemistry of the purification of water could be so interesting. I mean, forget history books, put a few more of these on the shelves and history is fascinating.
Was there a storyline besides that? Oh, of course. What is a book without a storyline? Well, a textbook, but this was no textbook. I found myself want

Fabulous historical tales can be hard to come by which is why I treasure the work of Elizabeth Camden. Able to combine real history with sweet romance, she is a master of her craft. Her latest novel, A Daring Venture, continues the story of the history of clean water in New York begun in A Dangerous Legacy. You don’t have to read that book to enjoy this one, although it does provide a good deal of background information you might find helpful.

The thing I love about Elizabeth Camden is how she can take a piece of history that we take for granted today and bring it to life. In A Daring Venture, it’s plumbing and water purification. Who knew those two things could make such an engaging and enjoyable read!

This was a surprisingly good book. I had never read this author and I wanted to check her out. I was more than impressed with the writing and the story.

Chlorination in our water supply is something we all expect and we think nothing about it. This story reminded me that it wasn’t always that way. I learned a great deal about the struggles scientist went through in an effort to provide safe drinking water for all.

A Daring Venture by Elizabeth Camden

Both Nick and Rosalind were strongly motivated by a desire to bring clean water to those in the cities. Their approaches, however, were at odds with each other. At a time when the only method for “cleaning” water was filtration, the very concept of adding “poison” (in this case, chlorine) to the water to make it safe was frightening and mostly unheard of.

This entire story is based on an actual lawsuit, and Dr. Leal and George Fuller are, as the author put it i
