I’m going to try and come back to this one. I love the monster type vibes, but I’m not feeling Mari or Taro, only Akira! But the setting is quite nice, and the writing is good!

Mari is a yokai, a supernatural being. Her clan is the Animal Wives, who are a very cunning, beautiful, and cold type of yokai. They enchant human men, marry them and rob them and return to their village with their husbands' riches. Mari is that rarity, a homely Animal Wife, which earns her mother some scorn among the fierce women. But her mother trains Mari in weapons, and from childhood sends her to kill roaming samurai as practice.

Mari hates to kill. She has an ambivalent relationship with h

Ok but...can someone explain to me what just happened???

Ok no I actually know what happened, IT WAS PRETTY DAMN CLEAR. AND IT WAS AMAZING.

Not gonna lie, this book and i were off to a rocky start. As much as I loved the setting and worldbuilding some minor things (that i'll detail in my full review) kind of made me go :// at the book. But

I squealed when I heard about this book. Asians in fantasy? Heck yes! However, I was kind of nervous coming into it because of previous experience with Asians and fantasy, but this book just blew my mind away.

Coming face to face with the horrors her people and others of a similar kind face in the city she pushes herself to succeed and bring honor to all and more importantly grant them the freedom they desire above all, but when enemies looking to enslave and

Empress of All Seasons is a beautiful YA, fantasy novel that is set in Ancient Japan. The story revolves around our heroine Mari who happens to be a yokai (now if you are not familiar with Japanese folklore, I highly recommend doing some research because Japanese mythology and folklore is superb) w

Empress of all seasons is a brave, inspiring and utterly captivating tale that everyone needs to add to their TBR pile immediately.

This book is base in Japanese folklore .The mythology is simply beautiful and the writing is poetic. It is action packed, full of romance and self-discovery. This both is all about honor, duty and family. The characters are relatable, real and in search of their own path.

Okay, it's been two days and I'm ready to gush about this book, so let's go.

Empress of All Seasons takes place in Hanoko, an ancient-Japanese-inspired world filled with humans and yokai, varied types of demon-esque creatures. Thankfully there is a glossary at the back, which is insanely helpful to keep track of all the different kinds.

This book is absolutely wonderful. I've read a spate of Asian-inspired YA fantasies at the moment and this is my favourite. I loved the rich world that the author built, a Japanese-inspired world where yokai are treated as second class citizens by a hateful human Emperor.

Mari is our protagonist, a yokai Animal Wife, who comes from an all-woman clan where they trick human men into marrying them and make off with their treasure. Mari has

What I liked of it, I loved! But what I didn’t like about it really stood out to me.

I loved the games and the battling between all the seasons! I loved the yokai and the differences between them. I loved how human Taro was, he’s whole thought process made complete sense to me. I loved Mari and her bravery and fear
I liked Akira and how he loved Mari despite that she didn’t love him.

The way the ending was poorly wrapped up, it almost felt like it was going to be a sequel and that would have been

This week we have a book that is quite a while from release but I loved it so much that I needed to tell everyone about it so that they can get it on their TBR piles as soon as its published.

The life of an Animal Wife is simple. Leave the mountain village, marry a rich man, rob him blind, return to mountain, and repeat. But for Mari that isn’t the case. She's trained her whole life to compete in a once in a generation com

I rate this book 4 stars. I had a hard time rating this one because I enjoyed the first three fourths quite a bit, and then at the end felt a bit letdown. Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean is about one girl/creature who lives in a world whose people is enslaved by the humans that rule it. She is brutally raised by her clan of women who only think about their beauty to ensnare men and then steal their fortunes. The only hope for someone plain like her in this community is to win the Seasons ch ...more

First of all, I want to thank HMH teen for supplying me with the arc of this book while I attended Yallwest.

For everyone looking for a new fantasy novel to read, I would definitely recommend this book! The Japanese folklore and culture is so rich and intricate and the world is written stunningly.

Things I love about the book:
    • The gods and how their stories are intertwined with the novel and its characters.
    • The feminist undertones throughout the novel.
    • The character arcs, how we get to see th

Set in a different country and time - Japan in the past - the book starts off telling us how the world came to be (moulded by gods and goddesses). Small stories involving the gods and their whims are sprinkled throughout the book as mini-explanations. I don't know if these are true Japanese fables/legends or made up, so I shall have to do a little research.
The book focuses on two types of beings that inhabit the world: The Yokai (which seem to be demon-like animals) and Humans. But there are al

I received an ARC from HMH at YALLWEST.

This book was pretty great, even though I figured out the Fall Room and Winter Room riddles pretty quickly. I enjoyed the dynamic of the characters and the world building, especially Taro. At first, I wasn’t too interested in the book, but once Mari and Taro met, I was hooked. The bits of backstory are also very well done and tie in nicely into the story.

I do wish though that more time was spent in each of the Seasonal Rooms, because those were some of my

I absolutely loved this book and its premise, although I was disappointed in the ending because I had hoped this was the beginning of a series set in a fascinating world. Mari's development as a character over the course of the book was interesting and deviated from the typical cliches of other fantasy adventures.

Honestly, the rushed summary at the end of the narrative was frustrating and felt more like an outline for something longer...I wish it hadn't been included. I wish the door had been le

So overall I did enjoy this book. It started out strong and I was super intrigued by Mari, an Animal Wife who since she isn't seen as beautiful by the other Animal Wives is trained in combat and sent to compete in the trials to marry Prince Taro, the son of the Emperor.
For me the pacing of the novel is a little off, with it being fairly slow in the introduction of the story, but the competition itself flies by and the conclusion (and wrap up) of the novel seems to come out of nowhere. That's re
